According to a new study published in Current Biology diagnosis of dyslexia it can be done even before a child learns to read; it seems in fact that visual attention deficit are predictive of subsequent disorders in reading, more than they have the language skills in pre-reading. According to Andrea Facoetti University of Padua this discovery puts an end to a long debate about the causes of dyslexia and paves the way for a pioneering new approach to the early identification and intervention in that 10% of children who struggle with reading difficulties extreme.
For a period of three years the researchers studied children of Italian language, from pre-kindergarten through the second grade reading. The team evaluated the ability of visual-spatial attention, the ability to filter relevant information from the irrelevant, the syllabic identification, short-term verbal memory, and rapid color naming, followed over the course of two years following the assessment.
